Details of RBI Directives

  • Non-Resident (Non-Repatriable) [NRNR] deposit scheme, has been discontinued from 1st April 2002. The existing deposits as on 31st March 2002 will be allowed to be continued till maturity. Those customers who are having NRNR term deposits maturing after 1st April 2002 have the option to credit the maturity proceeds of term deposit to Non-Resident External Account, for which the customer will receive an intimation from the Bank.
  • Similarly the Non-Resident (Special) Rupee [NRSR] Account scheme has been discontinued w.e.f. 1st April 2002. The existing deposits as on 31st March 2002 will be allowed to be continued till the date of maturity. On maturity the deposit proceeds will be credited to Non-Resident (Ordinary) [NRO] account of the customer, which continues to be Non-repatriable. NRSR Accounts other than term deposits account will not be allowed to be continued after 30th September 2002 and the customer has the option to close the account and the credit the balance therein to NRO account on or before 30th September 2002.
  • It will also be noted here that the proceeds of NRNR deposits will be allowed to be credited to NRE account only on maturity and in case of premature withdrawal the proceeds will be credited to NRO account.
  • In the NRO deposit scheme there is no change and the NRO FUNDS continue to be non-repatriable as hitherto.
